The back-story: On February 1990 the space probe Voyager 1, having completed its mission by visiting Jupiter and Saturn, was commanded to turn towards the Sun on order to photograph the planets of the solar system from afar. This resulted to the above picture of our planet, known as the Pale Blue Dot, which is taken from a mind-boggling distance of 6.054 billion kilometers from Earth, earning the distinction of our remotest picture so far. The text underneath is written by the late Carl Sagan, who both had the idea of taking the photo and named it.
I post it here on the eve of the annus mirabilis [/sarcasm] 2009 as it helps put things in perspective, giving us a tiny glimpse of who we really are. I hope I'll be proved wrong, but I'm afraid this little gem will turn out to be more useful this year than it ever was... Plus, I find the phrase "a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam" incredibly poetic.
And with these thoughts I have to leave you, in order to get ready for the New Year, whatever it turns out to be.

A delayed answer
A couple of days ago I posted an incomprehensible text, promising I would reveal what it is. Well, here's the explanation.
I assume that you're all familiar with the Babelfish. No, not *that* Babelfish, but the more mundane translation service provided by Yahoo.
Of course, as translation is done by algorithms, it isn't 100% accurate and sometimes it fails quite spectacularly. So imagine what would happen if you made a piece of text go back and forth through 10 consecutive translations. That, my friends, is babelization!
So, being utterly bored between classes, I decided to fool around with one implementation, and plugged one of my favourite theories in it:
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
The babelized text was, predictably, a piece of nonsense bearing no relation to the original:

ΟΚ, σαφώς τα search engines δεν είναι και η πρώτη πηγή επισκέψεων στο +βλογ+ (εν αντιθέσει με τα referrals από άλλα blogs - mille merci monsieur null). Πλην όμως δεν παύει να με εκπλήσσει το ότι το 33% των αναζητήσεων που οδηγούν εδώ να αναφέρονται στον βίλλο -ήτοι το ανδρικό μόριο, το οποίο είχα απλά αναφέρει σε ένα παλιό, ξεχασμένο ποστ για τις σχέσεις πολιτικών-εκκλησίας στην Τζύμπρο.
Επίσης παρατηρώ πως, στη σχετική αναζήτηση στο Google βγαίνω πρώτη μούρη (μην είμαι βιλλομούτσουνος?)

Farewell, little robot
Phoenix, the NASA Mars lander that confirmed the presence of ice on the Martian soil, succumbed to red planet's winter. There's little hope that it will be revived in spring (Martian spring, that is) because of the extremely low temperatures that it will encounter (all the way down to -180oC), which will probably ruin its life-sustaining electronics.

Why buggered?
Διότι από χτες το βράδυ έχω κάνει με το αυτοκίνητο τα εξής δρομολόγια:
Ν. Ερυθραία-Βαρυμπόπη-Γλυφάδα-Ν. Ερυθραία-Γλυφάδα-Ν. Ερυθραία-Βαρυμπόπη-Ν. Ερυθραία
που αντιστοιχούν σε περίπου 180 χλμ. αστικής & περιαστικής διαδρομής σε 12 ώρες, υπό καταρρακτώδη βροχή (χτες) και ήλιο, ζεστη & 95% υγρασία (σήμερα).Μα τον Αγ. Χριστόφορο (μεγάλη -με το συμπάθειο- η χάρη του) δε θα ξαναπιάσω τιμόνι για αρκετές μέρες ακόμα.
Θα σκίσω το δίπλωμα μου (μόλις τελείωσω με τη βρώση του καπέλου μου). Πρέπει να ξαναπάω μία ακόμα το σιρκουϊ Ν. Ερυθραία-Βαρυμπόπη-και πίσω (χλμ. 15)!!!

LHC & The End of the World
Tomorrow at 9:30 Central European Time (10:30 local), as you may know, the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will "turn on", i.e. its main proton beam will circulate for the first time through its entire length, achieving energies far higher than any other accelerator has reached before.
This, as well as the ultimate goal of the entire experiment (finding the elusive Higgs boson -a.k.a. "The FSM particle"- something perceived as an act of hubris by many) has led to speculation about whether the world is about to end in a freaky high energy physics accident.
I, for one, believe that all this was prophesied a long, long time ago (1979!) by the great & late Douglas Adams:

Βλέπεις τα κλασικά, τα τετριμμένα, γκρικ ταβέρνα εντ σταφ, παραλίες σούπερ οργανωμένες (αλλά οχι με την αίγλη της Μυκόνου χιχιχι [Μη χέσω -Μ.Σ.]) κλαμπάκια [μμμναι... -Μ.Σ.],σκαλάκια και τα ρέστα αλλά ξέρεις ότι κάπου εκεί, πιο μέσα κρύβεται κάτι πολύ πολύ διαφορετικό και στο χέρι σου (και στο αυτοκίνητο/σκάφοςσου επίσης) είναι το αν θα το ψάξεις παραπέρα... [Επίσης -και παραδόξως θα έλεγα- είχε πολλές, μα πολλές ευκαιρίες για γνωριμίες, απ'όσο αποδείχθηκε, από τους...θαλασσόλυκους στο Jinetera μέχρι τα παιδιά από την Πάτρα -χαιρετίσματα, btw, αν το διαβάζετε αυτό- Μ.Σ.]
Δεν ξέω για σένα Μ.Σ. [ξέρεις & παραξέρεις, σαλουφίτσα μου... - Μ.Σ.] αλλά για μένα ήταν αρκετά διαφωτιστικές οι διακοπές αυτές..

Δεν είναι τυπική Γερμανία,είναι μια μοναδικά ζωντανή αλλά και ήρεμη πολυσυλλεκτική και αντιφατική πόλη, πολύ νέα και γεμάτη και πολύ παλιά και κουρασμένη μαζί..
Είναι μάλλον η πόλη των ονείρων μου...
Αναζητείται ποδήλατο και στέγη στο Βερολίνο , δεκτές όλες οι προτάσεις (Ακόμα και δια γαμβρούς με σπίτι στας εξωτερικάς!)

Ζητείται ελπίς
Τελικά, ίσως ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά χαρακτηριστικά του ανθρώπου, από αυτά που μας διαχωρίζουν από τα υπόλοιπα όντα του ζωικού βασιλείου, είναι η ελπίδα και οι προσδοκίες.
Αυτή η ικανότητα του ανθρώπου να επιλέγει ποιες πλευρές μιας κατάστασης θα δει/θα αντιμετωπίσει έτσι ώστε πάντα να υπάρχει περιθώριο να σκέφτεται οτι μπορεί να αλλάξει η συγκεκριμένη κατάσταση, ώστε πάντα να ελπίζει στην αλλαγή.
Πολλές φορές αν και συνειδητά και με βάση τη λογική μας βλέπουμε οτι αυτό είναι ουτοπικό, εμείς συνεχίζουμε να έχουμε προσδοκίες από φίλους,συντρόφους,συνεργάτες, ενώ βαθιά μέσα μας πιστεύω οτι ξέρουμε οτι οι προσδοκίες αυτές είναι (φρούδες) ελπίδες.
Μη με παρεξηγήσετε, δεν θεωρώ κακό το να ελπίζεις, αυτό που όμως με ενοχλεί στην ανθρώπινη φύση και κατ'επέκταση σ'εμένα, έναν καθ'όλα λογικό και συγκροτημένο άνθρωπο, είναι η δυσκολία μας να απαγκιστρωθούμε από ανεκπλήρωτες ελπίδες, ακόμα και όταν βλέπουμε οτι πλέον είναι μάταιο να πιστεύουμε σε αυτές.
Με ενοχλεί λοιπόν το να ελπίζω όταν αυτό έρχεται σε πλήρη αντίθεση με την (ψυχρή;) λογική μου. Ακόμα είμαι στη φάση της ενόχλησης...Ελπίζω οτι κάποια στιγμή θα περάσω και στο στάδιο της διαχείρησης, θα έχω λιγότερες προσδοκίες και απαιτήσεις από τους ανθρώπους και δε θα περιμένω την ανατροπή, η οποία ξέρω πολύ καλά οτι δεν πρόκειται να συμβεί.
Πολύ απαισιόδοξο ποστ,το ξέρω...
Και σίγουρα πολλά πολλά επιχειρήματα για να υποστηρίξουν το άκρως αντίθετο...
Όλα είναι θέμα μουντ (sic!) και ερεθισμάτων υποθέτω...

Η εισβολή
Η μέρα κυλούσε ήσυχα, με τους χαλαρούς ζεστούς ρυθμούς του ελληνικού καλοκαιριού. Όλοι ήταν απασχολημένοι, κάποιοι σε δουλειές, κάποιοι με διαβάσματα, κάποιοι άλλοι πασαλειμμένοι με λάδια έπαιζαν ρακέτες στις κοντινές παραλίες..Κανείς τους όμως δεν περίμενε αυτό που επρόκειτο να συμβεί.
Δεν υπήρχε καμία προειδοποίηση...Δεν υπήρχε κανένα σημάδι,κάτι που θα μπορούσε να τους προετοιμάσει έστω και λίγο...
Ένας μόνο ήξερε...Ο Μ. Το βάρος της γνώσης αυτής τον πλάκωνε, ένιωθε οτι είναι υπεύθυνος για την μοίρα των υπόλοιπων, όλων αυτών που αγνοούσαν αυτό που ήδη είχε αρχίσει να συμβαίνει. Ήξερε οτι με κάποιον τρόπο έπρεπε να σταματήσει την ΕΙΣΒΟΛΗ...της ΝΣΚ...στο ιστολόγιο του!!!
Ε και πήγε στο Σύνταγμα και έβγαλε μια φωτο με τη φάτσα του και την πόσταρε ενόσο καθόταν στο παγκάκι... Μετά απο αυτό ήξερε οτι η Ν. δε θα έγραφε ποτέ στο μπλογκ του...
Ήξερε τόσο καλά την ψυχοσύνθεση της, τις απόψεις της και τα πιστεύω της που με αριστοτεχνικό τρόπο, με τη χάρη ενός επιδέξιου παίκτη του γκόλφ και τη μαεστρία ενός κηπουρού που παίρνει θάμνους και δημιουργεί παραδείσια πουλιά και τσιπούρες απέφυγε την εισβολή...Χωρίς να υπάρξουν θύματα, χωρίς να χυθεί στάλα αίμα ο Μ. τα καταφερε για άλλη μια φορα...
Διοτι η ΝΣΚ απλά δεν παίζει να ποστάρει σε ένα μπλογκ που είναι πτυσσόμενο μεταφερόμενο και τοσο μα τοσο γκικυ!!!!!!!!!

Sliver of hope...NOT!
Από τη σημερινή e-Καθιερωμένη:
"Ενώ το 53% των Αμερικανών ενώνει τη φωνή του με τους ανά τον κόσμο υποστηρικτές της κατάργησης των βασανιστηρίων [...] το 44% των Αμερικανών πολιτών υποστηρίζει τα βασανιστήρια στην περίπτωση των τρομοκρατών, ενώ ένα ποσοστό 13% θεωρεί πως τα βασανιστήρια πρέπει να επιτρέπονται γενικώς."
Μναι...
Δηλαδής για να καταλάβω, σχεδόν οι μισοί πολίτες της παραπαίουσας υπερδύναμης υποστηρίζουν την κατάφωρη παραβίαση κάθε έννοιας ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων όταν το θύμα είναι...τρομοκράτης?
Μάϊστα.
Για ορίστε μου περικαλώ την έννοια τρομοκράτης... Διότι την τελευταία φορά που κοίταξα δεν υπήρχε ενιαίος ορισμός φορ φακ'ς σέικ!!! Τρομοκράτης για κάποιους είναι ο Usāmah bin Lādin, για άλλους ο George 'Dubya' Bush, για κάποιους άλλους η Αυτού Αγιότης ο Δαλάι Λάμα και ούτω καθ'εξής.
Πλην όμως τα Αμερικανάκια αναφέρονται -προφανώς- στη δική τους ερμηνεία της τρομοκρατίας, η οποία όμως -όπως η ιστορία έχει δείξει- είναι ρευστότερη του υδραργύρου. Και, συν τοις άλλοις, στο παρελθόν έχουν συλληφθει & φυλακιστεί (και ενδεχομένως βασανιστεί) άτομα τα οποία αργότερα απεδείχθησαν αθώα (had been determined not to have been "enemy combatants" λέει σχετικά η wikipedia).
Άρα με τι κριτήρια αποφασίζει το 44% των αμερικανών (μόλις 134 εκ. άνθρωποι) πως είναι ΟΚέικ να βασανίζεις κάποιον που τον έχεις φυλακίσει βάσει των δικών σου ορισμών προκαταλήψεων και του οποίου την ενοχή δεν έχεις κάν διασφαλίσει??? (Δε θα μιλήσω καν για το υπόλοιπο 13%. Το ψηφιακό σάλιο μου αξίζει καλύτερη μοίρα από τα μούτρα των καλών χριστιανών του αμερικανικού Νότου.)
Ελπίζω όχι με τα ίδια κριτήρια με τα οποία θα εκλεγεί ο επόμενος πλανηταρχίδης Πρόεδρος τον Νοέμβρη, διότι τότε, αγαπητέ ανγνώστη, την πουτσίσαμε για μία ακόμα 4ετία...

Είδα επίσης σήμερα στην Καθημερινή το ακόλουθο άρθρο και είπα να κράξω ξεφωνήσω σχολιασω εδώ, αλλά μετά σκέφτηκα πως α) έχω και εργασίες που εκκρεμούν, β) πολύ τους τη λέω τώρα τελευταία, ας χαλαρώσω λίγο γιατί [liako]μας παρακολουθούουουουουνεεεεε[/liako] (just kidding... or am I?) και γ) δεν ξέρω ποιά είναι τα αντίστοιχα ποσοστά για την Ελλάδα (αν και αυτά κυμαίνονται αγρίως αναλόγως του τιμάριθμου, της Eurovision και των μεγάλων ποδοσφαιρικών διοργανώσεων) και δε λέει να κοροϊδεύω -εμμέσως- τα μούτρα μου.
Τι λέτε? Α, το άρθρο για να κλείσουμε...
Το αρθράκι λοιπόν λέει πως "περίπου τρία τέταρτα των Αμερικανών πιστεύουν στα θαύματα και τον παράδεισο". Ένας στους 5 δε, λαμβάνει απευθείας απαντήσεις στις προσευχές του τουλάχιστον μία φορά την εβδομάδα.

It's THAT day!!!
Ναι λοιπόν, σήμερα σύμφωνα με τις επίσημες ανακοινώσεις βγαίνει η καινούρια & απαστράπτουσα αλεπουδίτσα της φωτιάς!
Ο Firefox 3 θα είναι κοντά μας από τις 5 μ.μ. 8 μ.μ. ώρα Ελλάδος (αν έχω κάνει καλά τη μετατροπή από την ώρα Ειρηνικού... δεν την έκανα καλά, όχι), και θα έλεγα πως είναι καλή ιδέα να τον κατεβάσετε, για περισσότερους από ένα λόγους:
1ον, (λέγεται πως) είναι με διαφορά ασφαλέστερος του Internet Explorer. Εγώ πάντως τον χρησιμοποιώ τα τελευταία 2.5 χρόνια και έχω βρει την ησυχία μου...
2ον, έρχεται έτοιμος με διάφορα goodies τα οποία πολύ πρόσφατα υιοθέτησε ο IE (βλέπε tabs, download manager, incremental (αυξητική?) έρευνα κλπ)
3ο, είναι εύκολα παραμετροποιήσιμος στις ανάγκες και τις επιθυμίες του κάθε χρήστη. Υπάρχουν -εκατοντάδες- διαθέσιμα θέματα που αλλάζουν απλά την εμφάνισή του (de gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum) όπως και...
4ο (και μάλλον βασικότερο), οι extensions που προσθέτουν δυνατότητες πολύ πέρα από τις συμβατικές ενός διαδικτυακού διαφυλλιστή web browser και σε γλιτώνουν από σημαντικούς πονοκεφάλους (AdBlock Plus, FlashBlock, NoScript για τους μυημένους)
Τώρα που το σκέφτομαι, θα μπορούσα να τα αναλύσω διεξοδικότερα σε επόμενο post, αφού το θέμα σηκώνει πολύ νερό... Χμμμμ...
5ο, αποτελεί ένα δωρεάν προϊόν (ακούω κάποιον να φωνάζει τσιφούτηηηη...?), το οποίο μπαίνει σιγά-σιγά στο μάτι της MegaHard, κάτι το οποίο από μόνο του αποτελεί λόγο να το αγκαλιάσουμε, non?
Ά και 6ο και τελευταίο, παίζει και ρεκόρ Guinness για το λογισμικό που θα κατεβεί πιο πολλές φορές μέσα σε ένα 24ωρο!
Τι λέτε πιστοί μου αναγνώστες, δεν αξίζει να βοηθήσουμε την αλεπουδίτσα να γίνει ακόμα πιο δημοφιλής, άρα και ακόμα καλύτερη?
